RM Re-Library is a series of reprints of two or three classic volumes from the long history of RM LIBRARY , which has already published over 280 issues. The 26th volume in the series will be a reprint of "Hiking on Tokyo Suburban Trains in 1935 " (by Ogihara Jiro) from RM Library Volumes 70 and 71 .

The term "suburban train" is a bit old, but in Tokyo it refers to mainly private railways that extended outside the Yamanote Line. Setagaya and Nerima, which are now part of the big city, were considered to be suburban at the time, and from the Taisho to the early Showa era, an increasing number of people moved from the city center in search of larger, more comfortable homes. "Suburban trains" were rapidly developed as a form of transportation for such people.

This book is a record of the hobby activities of Jiro Ogiwara, a pioneer of railroad enthusiasts who continued his hobby activities for a long time after the war, from his childhood before the war. The word "hiking" was also popular at the time, and meant a short trip for leisure. In an era when information was still scarce, everything he saw was fresh, and this book conveys his passion to desperately try to capture it on camera.

The prewar Showa era is sometimes seen as a dark time, as it was the eve of the Pacific War, but the author writes that the several years around 1935 were a time when the soil was laid for enjoying railway hobbies as a culture, railway technology was evolving rapidly, and it was a fleeting good time. Moreover, it is valuable that a large number of photographic records, even though they are in black and white, have been left behind during this period, and it is no exaggeration to say that this book reveals the true state of prewar Tokyo's railways.
