Before the war, in order to meet the growing demand for passenger service between Tokyo and Osaka, the Ministry of Railways at the time planned to increase the number of passenger trains on the Tokaido Main Line. To accommodate this increase, the EF57 was completed in 1940 as a locomotive with increased power compared to the conventional EF56 type electric locomotive.
From the No. 2 locomotive onwards, new designs were clearly evident, with heat exhaust devices for the resistors mounted on the ceiling being installed in various places on the roof, the pantograph being mounted close to the outside of the car body (which made it protrude even further from the car body when more cars were added after the war), and some cars having sharp angles, all of which gave the car a strong, bold and daring appearance, and they were even hailed as the masterpiece of deck-mounted electric locomotives.
After the war, it moved from the Tokaido Main Line to the Joetsu Line, and then in the 1960s it was transferred to the Tohoku Main Line, where it pulled a wide range of trains, from express trains to local trains.
This book introduces the history of its appearance, its activities and events on each line. It also covers the changes in each part and details over the years. It also covers the main train formations. And with special permission from Utsunomiya City, the only preserved locomotive, Utsunomiya Station East Park No. 7, the details of the interior, roof, underfloor, etc. are covered.
This is a unique resource.
