RM Re-Library is a reprint of two or three volumes of the best volumes from the long history of RM LIBRARY , which has already exceeded 260 issues. The eighth volume of the series focuses on the "mail and baggage diesel railcars," which were a minority of JNR diesel railcars with special uses. These were published as the 20th and 21st volumes of the RM Library, and also include four new pages of color graphs.

In later years, they became a minority among the many general-purpose cars, but in fact, the first diesel railcar of the Japanese National Railways was the Kihani 5000 series, a third-class baggage combined car. A very small part of the small two- axle body was used as a baggage compartment, and the idea is that this one car can handle passenger trains on quiet local lines. The second diesel railcar, the Kihani 36450 series, was a large car at once, but it was also a combined car designed for single-car operation.

They began to come into full use after the war, in the 1950s and later. They were needed when passenger trains (which naturally had baggage cars and mail cars attached) were converted to diesel railcars. Initially, when electric diesel railcars, which were only prototypes, were converted to hydraulic railcars, the plan was to also convert them into mail and baggage cars. After that, modified hydraulic railcars and new railcars appeared, and they were in operation with their unique style from Hokkaido to Kyushu. They fulfilled their mission until the end of the JNR's postal and baggage transport era.

This book explains these postal and baggage diesel railcars by type, categorizing them according to the series from which they were made. It is also packed with information such as a wealth of photos of the types, diagrams of the types, history tables, and specification tables. As is common with modified cars, there are individual differences, but this has been made as clear as possible at a glance. The inside photos of mail and baggage transport included at key points are highly valuable and will deepen your understanding of these vehicles, whose use has now disappeared. It is a highly comprehensive book, making it a valuable collector's edition.
