The San'in Line is a 108km railway line that connects Gotsu Station (Shimane Prefecture) and Miyoshi Station (Hiroshima Prefecture) on the Sea of Japan side.
Construction began at the end of the Taisho period as one of the national railway lines crossing the Chugoku Mountains to connect the Sanyo region on the Seto Inland Sea side with the San'in region on the Sea of Japan side, and the first section opened in 1930 (Showa 5).
Although it was extended several times after that, the entire line was not opened until 1975 (Showa 50), 45 years later.
Almost the entire line is a scenic route that follows the Eno River, but because it follows a meandering river, there was not originally much passenger demand to run the entire line.
There were times when special trains for tourists, such as beach trains and steam locomotive trains, were operated, but it was finally decided that the entire line would be abolished at the end of March 2018 (Heisei 30).
This book introduces the 88-year history of the San'in Line with photographs and documents.
