In Japanese National Railways, a "control car" is a vehicle used together with a shunting locomotive when shunting freight cars, etc., for reasons such as wiring.
In particular, in Aomori and Hakodate, they were famously used to load and unload cars onto railway ferries, by coupling them between the freight cars and the locomotives so that the shunting locomotives did not have to be loaded onto the drawbridge or ferry.
Even though these reserve cars were the same model, they came in various forms depending on the region and the base car, and along with the passenger car rescue cars, they were a source of enjoyment for fans traveling around the region.
This book provides explanations with many photographs, from the prewar Hi-1 type to the Hi-600 type, which was used even after the privatization of the Japanese National Railways.
