The Shiratori express train was a limited express train that ran between Osaka and Aomori via the Hokuriku Main Line from October 1961 to March 2001.

The initial distance of 1,052.9 km was the longest for a daytime express train on a conventional line in Japan.
Initially, the Shiratori was operated as a diesel railcar and ran between Osaka and Aomori as well as between Osaka and Ueno, with the two trains coupled together between Osaka and Naoetsu. However, the train departing from and arriving at Ueno was separated in October 1965 as the Hakutaka which ran between Ueno and Kanazawa.
In 1972, the entire line on which the Shiratori operated was electrified, and from then on, it was operated by 485 series electric trains until it was discontinued in March 2001.
In addition, from the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen at Hachinohe in December 2002 (Heisei 14) until the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in March 2016 (Heisei 28), the Shinkansen connecting express train running between Honshu and Hakodate was nicknamed "Shirotori."
This book looks back on the history of the express train "Hakucho," focusing on its operating history between Osaka and Aomori.
