Even today, the Japanese National Railways (JNR) continues to ignite the hearts of rail fans. The period when JNR's rolling stock underwent the most dynamic technological development was the time of the blank timetable revision in October 1968 (commonly known as the "4-3-5" period). While steam locomotives were still in use in many areas, electric trains and locomotives incorporating new technologies were appearing one after another.
The well-established series "JNR Vehicles in the Golden Age of Guidebooks" is the definitive vehicle guidebook that thoroughly explains JNR vehicles from this "four, three, five" era by category and type. The author is Nobuhiko Asahara, the man who is known for "guidebooks." The latest volume 15 is the third volume in the "Steam Locomotives" series, following volumes 13 and 14. In addition to the three JNR Hudson brothers C60, C61, and C62, the four types of freight 9600 series, which was born in the Taisho era but was the last surviving JNR steam locomotive, are included. The large passenger locomotives C60 to 62, which were also used to pull express trains, are the eternal dream of steam locomotive fans. Not only explanatory texts but also a wealth of graphs and photographs are used to convey the true image of the locomotives to future generations.
