RM Re-Library is a series of reprints of two or three volumes of masterpieces from the long history of RM LIBRARY , which has already exceeded 280 issues. The 20th volume in the series is a complete reprint of the 50th commemorative issue of RM Library, "Memories of the Showa Era: A Color Look Back at Trains and Trains of the 1950s " (by Mitani Retsuichi).
In the early 1950s , as Japan was emerging from the post-war turmoil, trains were suddenly replaced by colorful vehicles, whereas up until that point trains had mostly been black or brown. This was also a time of dramatic advances in train technology, such as the appearance of high-performance electric trains.
This was a time when the world of railways was undergoing great changes, both technologically and aesthetically, but film was still expensive at the time, and so there are not many color photographs of the period. This book presents those precious color film records in an all-color edition that is available only for this milestone commemorative issue of the RM Library.
This book not only features the glamorous vehicles that were the poster children of a new era, but also many scenes of the final exploits of the veteran trains from the Meiji and Taisho eras that could still be seen in this day and age.
Also, as this was the last period in which streetcars were in their heyday, one chapter is devoted to records of these areas. There is no doubt that the atmosphere of the times will be strongly conveyed from the clothing of the people walking along the streets and the cars they drive.
This volume is the first in the RM Re-Library series to be in full color, and we hope it will be enjoyed by everyone who has fond memories of the Showa era.
