RM Re-Library is a series of reprints of two or three of the best volumes from the long history of RM LIBRARY , which has already published over 270 issues. The 17th volume in the series is a combined edition of "Hokkaido Private Railway Tour in the Summer of 1954 (Vol. 1 and 2)" (by Eiichi Aoki) from RM Library Vol. 58 and Vol. 59 .

The author is a leading researcher into private railways in various regions, but the starting point of his life's work was a 19- day trip to Hokkaido he embarked on as a student. During this trip, he visited the majority of the private railways in Hokkaido that were in operation at the time (including simplified tracks and dedicated lines), and left detailed records. The results of this trip have been reflected in many research books and articles to date, but I feel that this book is of great value as a standalone travelogue in that it recaptures the fresh sensibilities of young people at the time.

In addition, most of the private railways in Hokkaido have now been abolished, making this a noteworthy example of the shift in industrial structure and the loss of local industries.

In 1954 , the author boarded the Toya Maru, a ferry between the Hakodate and Hakodate ports, and returned safely to Tokyo. However, one month later, the Toya Maru sank in a typhoon ... This is a book that will leave you in awe in many ways.
