In the 1950s, during the period of rapid economic growth, major private railway companies began competing with each other to produce high-performance trains.
Among these, the Tokyu 5000 series (first generation), which incorporated the most advanced technology of the time, such as an ultra-lightweight egg-shaped cross-section body made using a monocoque structure and lightweight bogies that were close to the limit of what was possible, gained popularity as an epoch-making vehicle among high-performance private railway trains at the time, and was affectionately nicknamed the "Blue Frog" due to its rounded body and green body color. It continued to be the face of Tokyu for over 30 years.
After being retired from Tokyu, they were transferred to local private railways across the country, making a significant contribution to their high performance and modernization.
This book uses many valuable photographs to provide a detailed explanation of the changes made over the years and types of trains from the time of their introduction, including the 5000 series and the 5200 series trains with stainless steel bodies, to their use after their retirement and transfer to local private railways.
