This is the 6th installment of the ``Railway Vehicle Guide: JNR Passenger Cars'' series, which focuses on specific types and explains their variations, modifications, and updates by age with photos, with an emphasis on railway model fans!
As the second part of the definitive 12 series passenger car for JNR express, we will focus on the JR version and later.

The 12 series passenger cars were introduced in 1969, with the Osaka World Exposition the following year in mind, and with a view to transporting groups from various places and operating special trains, these trains, which had previously been operated with old prewar and wartime passenger cars, were modernized. This is a vehicle that has advanced the following.

After the Expo, they were used in express trains on all lines outside of Hokkaido, but in the 1980s, express trains were abolished and upgraded to limited express trains one after another, and their role gradually narrowed.

Meanwhile, the Japanese National Railways authorities were looking for ways to develop non-traditional travel products as part of the reforms aimed at transitioning to JR.
Among these, we planned to update the ``Ozashiki Train'' that has been popular since the days of Japanese National Railways, and to develop travel using Western-style and European-style passenger cars for those groups. The vehicle chosen for this modification was originally a 12 series passenger car for express trains.

"Railway Vehicle Guide Vol. 36 12 Series Passenger Cars (Part 1)" focuses on Joyful Trains that were modified from the appearance of the 12 Series passenger cars until the end of the Japanese National Railways period.
In this issue, in addition to the Joyful Train that appeared after JR, we will cover event passenger cars, other Sl trains, trolley trains that are active on tourist routes in various places, and even private railways, including the 12 series that continues to be active for the last time. This is the content that will be introduced.

This book also includes drawings of representative vehicle types for each train, along with photos of the inside of the train, and is an indispensable resource for model materials.
