The early Showa period, when steel carriages were beginning to replace traditional wooden carriages, was also a time when new local railways were opening all over the country. Nippon Sharyo, one of Japan's leading carriage manufacturers at the time, established standard specifications and then designed and proposed carriages to these railways to meet the transportation needs of each company, delivering highly efficient, short-term, and low-cost steel trains. These carriages were treasured by each company as a kind of memorial to their founding, and even today, more than 90 years after their manufacture, about 10% of them remain as preserved carriages and can be seen.
The first volume of this book explains the life cycle of a series of standard design electric trains used by Ueda Kotsu, Keifuku Electric Railway Fukui Branch, Takamatsu-Kotohira Electric Railway, Ichibata Electric Railway, and others, including Nippon Sharyo catalogs from the time.
