Among JNR's passenger cars for business use, the second most numerous after rescue cars were distribution cars, which not only regularly made rounds to supply the materials and equipment needed at each site, such as stations, offices, and factories, but also served as "supply sales cars" that made the rounds carrying supplies and daily necessities necessary for the lives of employees and their families.

In 1953, when JNR distribution cars were given the type designation "Ru," most of them were wooden cars, but from 1956 onwards, the number of cars converted from steel passenger cars increased, and by the end of 1965, the number had reached 100. However, with the rationalization of material operations and the shift to automobile transport, cars were rapidly scrapped, and by the end of fiscal year 1972, the number had fallen to single digits. This book uses numerous photographs and illustrations to introduce the little-known reality and role of JNR distribution passenger cars.
