Tsukuba Railway, which connected Tsuchiura on the Joban Line and Iwase on the Mito Line, was called "Tsukuba Railway" when it opened in April 1918, but merged with the Jōsō Railway in a wartime business consolidation and became the Jōsō Tsukuba Railway Tsukuba Line. In June 1965, it merged with the Kashima-Sangū Railway, a member of the Keisei Group, to become the "Kanto Railway Tsukuba Line," and in April 1979, the Tsukuba Line was separated into a separate company along with the Hokota Line to become the "Tsukuba Railway" (second generation), and in its roughly 70-year history until the entire line was closed in March 1987, it changed its name three times. Volume 2 explains each station between Tsuchiura and Iwase and the successive rolling stock from the steam locomotive era until the line was closed.
