In the 1953 (Showa 28) reform, JNR created a new vehicle classification, "business freight cars," and changed the cars that had previously been classified as "Ya," two-axle passenger cars, to "E" (rescue cars), "Sa" (work cars), and "Ya" (test cars) freight cars. These cars were also distinguished by having white stripes wrapped around their bodies.
This book focuses on these commercial freight cars, and also provides an overview and diagrams of "white-striped cars," as well as information on commercial substitute cars that complemented commercial freight cars (distribution car substitutes, work car substitutes, inspection car substitutes, rescue car substitutes, and steering car substitutes) organized by type and presented with over 150 photographs.
