Nagare-tetsu is a mini railway that runs 5.7 km between Mabashi Station on the Joban Line and Nagareyama Station in Nagareyama City, Chiba Prefecture.
It has a long history, having opened as the Nagareyama Light Railway in 1916 (Taisho 5). At the time, the line had a track gauge of 762 mm and was operated by steam locomotives.
In 1922 (Taisho 11), the company name was changed to Nagareyama Railway, and in 1924 (Taisho 13), the track gauge was changed to 1067 mm, the same as that of the Japanese National Railways.
Freight cars began to run directly with the Japanese National Railways.
After the war, in 1949 (Showa 24), the Nagareyama Railway was electrified in line with the electrification of the Joban Line.
In 1951 (Showa 26), the company name was changed to Nagareyama Electric Railway, and then changed to Nagareyama Electric Railway, and in 1971 (Showa 46), it became the Sobu Nagareyama Electric Railway.
In 2008, the company changed its name to Nagareyama Tetsudo, and continues to operate today as an essential form of transportation for the people of Nagareyama City.
This book is divided into two volumes and looks back on the railway's progress since its opening, with many photographs.
