The Hokuriku Railway Kananame Line is a railway line that runs from Hakusanshita Station in the mountains in southern Ishikawa Prefecture to Kaga Ichinomiya Station along the Tedori River. When it first opened in 1926 (Taisho 15), it was called the Kananame Railway, a very grandiose name that took one character from each of the cities of Kanazawa and Nagoya. During the war, many private railways in Ishikawa Prefecture were merged to form the Hokuriku Railway, of which the Kananame Line was also a part. In particular, the Kananame Line, along with the Ishikawa Line and Nomi Line to which it connects, was sometimes called the "Ishikawa General Line."
Like the Nomi Line, as passenger numbers decreased due to the spread of automobiles in the 1960s, service was reduced to morning and evening only. Service was suspended in 1984 (Showa 59), and no trains have been operated since then. The entire line was abolished in 1987 (Showa 62).
