Railway Vehicle Detail File Collector's Edition 003 EF10
The Ministry of Railways, the predecessor of Japan National Railways, started the history of domestically produced electric locomotives at the Ministry of Railways in 1928 (Showa 3), followed by the ED16 in 1931, and the EF53, an improved version of the EF52, which appeared the following year, ushering in the era of full-fledged electric locomotives.
At the same time, plans were launched for general-purpose electric locomotives, mainly for freight use, and the first EF10 was born in September 1934 (Showa 9). As a result of the operation of the first 16 cars, they gained a reputation for their stable performance and ease of handling, and in 1938 (Showa 13), eight cars were added, mainly for use in the Kanmon Tunnel, and they also led passenger trains.
A further 17 cars were built between 1940 and 1942, making up the final number of cars built.
The production period was nine years, and a total of 41 locomotives were produced, which was an unusually long and large number in the era when electric locomotives were still in their infancy. As a result of the development of locomotive manufacturing technology at each period being reflected in the locomotives, there were differences in their forms that meant that they could be called different models, despite being the same model.
This book brings together and re-edits the "Railway Vehicle Detail File" 002, 004, and 0007 published in 2009 and 2010, and takes a detailed look at the details of each car of the EF10, which is one of the foundations of electric locomotives and has rarely been given a comprehensive overview.
