Sometime before the war, there was a worldwide streamline boom in the world of vehicles. The Ministry of Railways, the predecessor of Japan's National Railways, was no exception and adopted streamlined designs for its various rolling stock. One of these is the EF55, which was introduced in 1936 as an electric locomotive for express trains.

This EF55 is unusual among electric locomotives, and has a body with a fixed direction of travel with only one side serving as the normal lead, and it stood at the head of honor trains throughout the pre-war and post-war periods.

However, as the era began to demand greater efficiency, the EF55, which had a single front and a streamlined body, became inconvenient to use, and the second and third of the three cars were scrapped and disassembled (modified).
Although the remaining No. 1 was designated as a quasi-railway monument, it remained in a corner of the engine room for a long time, but it was miraculously revived in 1986 in preparation for the conversion to JR.
Since then, he has been active on event trains mainly on JR East's Takasaki/Joetsu Line. In 2015, the nearly 30-year period of preservation after its revival ended, and it is now on display at the Railway Museum.
This book follows the history of the EF55 from its appearance to its final stages. We will explore everything about the EF55 through detailed photos of each part and drawings taken when it was revived in 1986.
