On December 19, 1909 (Meiji 42), a light rail line from Hiroshima/Yokokawa to Gion opened.
This Dainippon Orbital Hiroshima Branch (formerly Hiroshima Orbital), which has a gauge of 762 mm and a small steam locomotive pulling only one passenger car, is the root of the current JR Kabe Line.
The following year, it ran all the way to Kabe, and after being separated as Kabe Railway, it was run by Hiroshima Electric Power Company, where it was electrified and retracked, and became Hirohama Railway with the aim of connecting Yin and Yang, before being nationalized in 1936 ( It was in 1933.
After nationalization, the road was repeatedly extended towards San'in and Hamada, and in 1969 (Showa 44), the 46.2km stretch from Kabe to Sandankyo was opened, and construction on the remaining section finally began, but with the management restructuring of JNR, that dream finally came to an end. It failed without success.
This book chronicles the eventful history of the Kabe Line over more than 110 years, from the application for a patent for the Hiroshima orbit in 1906 (Meiji 39) to the planned reopening of a portion of the Kabe-Aki Kameyama section in March of this year. look back.
