``RM Re-Library'' reprints two to three volumes of past masterpieces from ` `RM LIBRARY '', which has a long history of over 280 issues. The 19th volume in the series is RM Library Volume 44 “All About Japan National Railways Heated Cars” (written by Seiichi Okada) and Volume 95 “Special Service Vehicles - Children of the Occupation, History of a Short Life” (written by Akira Fujii and Goro Fujita). This is a combined book.

The need for heated cars arose with the progress of railway electrification. When pulling a steam locomotive, steam heating using running steam was possible, but electric locomotives do not have that heat source, so they have no choice but to use heating cars equipped with boilers for heating only during the winter. I used them in conjunction. Its heyday was in the pre-war period, but after the war the large Manu 34 type also appeared and remained impressive until around 1970 . By then, locomotive steam generators ( SG ) or electric heating systems ( EG ) had become commonplace for heating passenger trains.

On the other hand, special service vehicles are passenger cars that were created in 1949 on the recommendation of the Civilian Transport Service ( CTS ) of the Allied Forces, and a total of 16 of them were created for the purpose of domestic travel for the Allied Forces General Headquarters and foreign distinguished guests. It was well-equipped for the time, and it was noted that many of the cars had closed observation decks, which was unprecedented on Japanese National Railways. However, just three years later, in 1952 , the Allied forces withdrew due to the Japan-US Peace Treaty taking effect, and these special duty vehicles, which had lost their primary purpose, were restored to general business vehicles or converted into other commercial passenger vehicles. Sometimes I was. Because it was used as a special duty car for such a short period of time, and because it was also a turbulent period after the war, it has become something of a legendary passenger car.

This book focuses on two types of passenger cars that have no connection to the general public and have disappeared in ancient times. In the heating car section, we introduce explanations of all the types that have been used in the past, the evolution of train heating systems, and the actual operation of heating cars. The special duty vehicle edition traces the vehicle history and subsequent changes for all 16 cars, and also includes valuable materials such as a complete list of special duty vehicles operated.
